The Role of Tectonic Discontinuities in Triggering Large Seismic Landslides

Abstract Rock landslides are generally controlled by a series of discontinuous interfaces formed damage to complex structural rock masses that is related folds, faults, and shear zones, which provide potential failure boundaries. Based on detailed case study, the authors illustrate not only affects 3D boundaries but also significantly controls initiation mode. In this paper, six large triggered 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (Ms 8.0) in carbonate strata within two wings an anticline selected as examples. A geological engineering investigation, mass testing, quality assessment performed. The results research show near core may be closely strength index, while far away from more likely preexisting weak zone slope. addition, combination planes zones further determines comparison earthquake-induced with gravity-induced reveals strong earthquakes accelerate process geomorphic erosion reducing index (GSI) values landslides. Finally, study proposes tectonic environments great importance assess location, mechanism, mode large-scale caused earthquakes.
